Being a productive 21st century learner and teacher requires hard work. Some people tend to think that technology and all the new gadgets available today are there to make our lives easier. In some cases this is true...remote starters for cars are a very nice thing on a cold morning. But in terms of education, technology poses new opportunities for teachers and learners and opens the doors to new ideas and ways of expressing what has been learned. It's not easy...but it is exciting and rewarding and important for our teachers and our kids.

There are many components to being a successful 21st teacher and learner. One of the most important ones for the teachers is to be innovative. The teacher must be able to build upon ideas given to them, and be able to make them useful, engaging, and creative. Students must learn to be more independent in their thinking, and their actions. Teachers should be facilitators, and the students must be more accountable for their own learning.

It is really nice to have time to explore the wonderful technology resources that are out there to enhance lessons and improve student motivation and learning. With all of the requirements of the classroom teacher, it is time to explore that usually gets pushed to the backburner, so it's great to be able to work directly with many of those resources today. I think that a great beginning of school activity could be students doing a wordle of words that describe them, turning it into a Powerpoint, and having all students view it to get an idea of their fellow classmates, teachers, aides, etc. who they will be spending the better part of the school year with.

It takes a lot of creativity and patience to be a productive 21st Century teacher. You also need to be quite flexible and able to learn new things quickly.

Hey Cap!
I use this site & my kids love it! Especially the "random name picker" and the "count down" w/ the mission impossible music...transitions and clean up have never been faster! :o)

I also made social studies games and put a link on my website and the kids have to play the games for homework.
